Xerocon London: a magical time for accounting and SMBs

A Xero event is always something to look forward to. So you can imagine how thrilled we were to head off to Xerocon London (Xero’s annual tech conference) last week for two days of technology, thought leadership, networking and magical new ideas… not to mention scoffing all the free ice cream, coffee and smoothies that were being handed out!

We love Xero online accounting here at Day Accountants. Have a read of last month’s blog post if you want the full lowdown on why Xero is our accounting platform of choice, but one important reason we’re such fans is how much effort Xero put into their events, education and updates.

An amazing community of people

If you’ve ever been to ExCel London, you’ll know what a huge space these conference halls can be. And with two separate halls, 2,000 attendees and 60 different exhibitors at this year’s event, Xerocon felt like a coming together of the whole UK Xero community under one roof – a real family of accountants, app providers, developers and, of course, the Xero UK team.

It may be a tech conference on the surface, but Xerocon is far more about the people and the conversations you have. It’s a hard feeling to explain, but once you’re in through the doors, you really do feel a part of something bigger – the Xero community is so strong and helpful to each other, and the two days of the event are as much to do with making face-to-face connections with your peers and suppliers as it is browsing the latest cloud apps in the ‘Expo Hall’.

We loved getting to chat with everyone in the wider Xero ecosystem, and certainly picked up some ideas for new partnerships and new apps that we can bring to you, our clients.

Xero had some tricks up their sleeve

The whole event was brilliantly hosted by Nigel Meade, presenter and magician, and there were plenty of astounding magic tricks throughout the two days (how he managed to pour milk out of an unopened can of Special Brew is still puzzling me!).

But Nigel wasn’t the only one bringing magic to the table: Xero themselves pulled some impressive rabbits of the magic software hat, with several new product updates aimed at making it easier for SMBs to get the business jobs done.

Here’s a few of the important updates that tickled our fancy:

  1. Xero Ask – a way for us to send you messages and questions about your accounts from right inside Xero, making it easier to resolve queries quickly and painlessly.
  2. Xero Expenses –  a soon-to-be-released standalone mobile app that lets you snap pics of your expense receipts on the run, and submit them straight to Xero with no keying in.
  3. CIS functionality – Xero will soon be able to deal with the complexity of the Construction Industry Scheme (CIS) and will calculate all the relevant tax deductions.
  4. Xero Projects– a project tool that allows you to manage your time, tasks and project management, and then invoice out to your customers based on each separate project.

There were so many announcements that we’re sure we’ve missed out a few along the way, but these were the areas where we think Xero is really going to help you improve the speed and efficiency of your bookkeeping, accounting and business processes.
